Eligibility criteria for Kalon Tripa candidates and nominees
As established by the Election Commission of the Tibetan Government in Exile, individuals running for the office of the Kalon Tripa must meet the following conditions:
- Must be a Citizen of Tibet (Green Book holder)
- Must be at least 35 years of age.
- No court or specialised physician has declared him/her insane or mentally unfit.
- Must not have been bankrupted or be currently insolvent and unable to pay outstanding debt.
- Must not have been convicted of any criminal act or wrong-doing by any law establishment or court.
- May not run for the Office of the Kalon Tripa if 2/3 or more members of the Tibetan parliament in-exile (TPIE) have voted and declared him/her ineligible.
- May not run for the Office of the Kalon Tripa if currently serving a second consecutive term as Kalon Tripa.
- May not run if he/she has been previously forced to resign from the Office of the Kalon Tripa, according to Article 29, third and fourth categories of the Tibetan Charter of exile.
- Must not have any allegiance or affiliation with any nation or foreign agency, nor hold any posts, or profession, nor derive any financial benefits, which hinders or is deemed detrimental to the interests of the Tibetan people.
